Orthodontics

Quin Dental provides early orthopaedic and "non extraction” dental orthodontics. Gerry is trained as a general dentist, and has a particular interest in orthodontic care. This is a large part of his practice and with continued education over the last two decades, he is one a few dentists in New Zealand who practice this way. His main passion is about improving airways and developing jaws without the need to extract permanent teeth.

At present research is trying to establish why malocclusion occurs. Recent research shows environmental factors such as mouth breathing play an important part.

In recent years’ techniques to develop the jaws back to a better size and shape have been developed. Dentofacial orthopaedics is the dental term for these techniques. Training methods to place the tongue back on the roof of the mouth, called  Facial Myofunctional Therapy (FMT) has been developed so that early treatment for children is a viable option. Many studies have shown benefits in early treatment such as larger airways and improved facial features.
