Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry. An orthodontist is a specialist who has undergone special training in a dental school or college after they have graduated in dentistry. The specialty deals primarily with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and the jaws. Quin Dental provides early orthopaedic and "non extraction" orthodontics. Gerry is trained as a general dentist, however he has a particular interest in orthodontic care and this has been a large part of his practice and continued education over the last two decades.
At present there is no confirmed reason why bad bites (malocclusion) occur. It is either genetic, environmental or a combination.
In recent years techniques to develop the jaws back to a better size and shape have been developed. Dentofacial orthopaedics is the dental term for these techniques. Training methods to place the tongue back on the roof of the mouth (oromyofunctional therapy) have been developed so that early treatment for children is a viable option. Many studies have shown benefits in early treatment such as larger airways and improved facial features.
